In Brazil the start of the FIFA world cup is just minutes away and halfway around the world, in Beirut, people are getting ready for the big event. Fans are in a frenzy, flags are fluttering on the balconies and the voice of the Arabian commentator marks the passing of time.

Everything is ready when a strange interference jams the signal. Football fans runt to the roves to take the antennas down and then reassemble them, rotating, inclining, trying to get them in the right direction but to no avail. TV frequencies seem to be shielded.

In Brasile mancano pochi minuti all’inizio dei mondiali FIFA e dall’altra parte del mondo, a Beirut, fervono i preparativi per il grande evento. Gli appassionati sono in fibrillazione, sui balconi sventolano le bandiere e la voce del telecronista arabo scandisce il passare degli attimi.

È già tutto pronto, quando una strana interferenza disturba il segnale. I tifosi si precipitano sui tetti, smontano e rimontano le antenne, le ruotano, le inclinano, tentano di orientarle nella giusta direzione ma ogni sforzo è inutile. Le frequenze sembrano schermate.

Even though this film falls within the After Hours section and the internet treats it as if it was a scary movie, The Cured has very little in common with the horror genre. Some might even say that classifying it as a horror film would be as hard as making the Mole Antonelliana wear Melissa Satta’s sheath dress, because many details of the movie lie outside of the tradition of the genre and a lot of attention was dedicated to aspects that do not fall in the style. Pur rientrando nella selezione After Hours ed essendo trattato da internet come un film di paura, con gli stilemi dell’horror questo The Cured ha poco da spartire. Verrebbe anzi da dire che catalogarlo nel novero degli horror movie è come pretendere di infilare la Mole Antonelliana in un tubino di Melissa Satta, per la varietà di spunti che esulano dalla tradizione del genere e per la grande attenzione dedicata ad aspetti che poco ci hanno a che fare. In this thirthy-fifth edition of Torino Film Festival, there are many deserving and interesting movies, and we don’t have to forget the renovated movie Notte Italiana. This movie was released in 1987, thirty years ago, and it highlights two essential beginnings: on the one hand, the production was directed by Nanni Moretti (it was the first movie made by Sacher Film). On the other hand, the dear departed Carlo Mazzacurati, as the director. Mazzacurati worked as an active director from the 80s to 2014, when he died. He is well-known to have described the troubled situation in the Italian North-East areas close to the new millennium. In this first movie, we can see him dealing with his territories, the foggy delta of the River Po and his swampy countryside.

“Notte italiana” di Carlo Mazzacurati

Tra i numerosi film degni di nota in questa trentacinquesima edizione del Torino Film Festival, non va dimenticato il restaurato Notte italiana. Uscito nel 1987, ben trent’anni fa, il film segna due importanti esordi: quello di Nanni Moretti alla produzione (è il primo film prodotto dalla Sacher Film) e soprattutto quello del compianto Carlo Mazzacurati alla regia. Mazzacurati, regista attivo dagli anni ’80 fino al 2014, anno della sua morte, è noto soprattutto per aver raccontato i turbamenti del Nord-Est Italiano negli anni a cavallo del nuovo millenio. In questo suo primo film lo vediamo già affrontare quelli che saranno i suoi territori, il nebbioso delta del fiume Po e la sua paludosa campagna. At the university of Paris 8, in the 93rd district of Seine-Saint-Denis, north of Paris, a competition called Eloquentia has been taking place for six years. As you can all guess, the tournament is about the art of public speaking: the contenders, students who live on the outskirts of Paris and come from all kinds of social backgrounds, are trained by various word professionals, such as lawyers, actors, drama teachers, and managers. After six weeks of hard work, the kids will have to demonstrate their abilities in front of a jury, that will then choose “the best public speaker of the 93rd”.

All’Università Paris 8, nel distretto 93 di Seine-Saint-Denis, periferia Nord di Parigi, si svolge da ormai sei anni una gara chiamata Eloquentia. Com’è intuibile, si tratta di una competizione di arte oratoria, per la quale i partecipanti, studenti dei sobborghi di Parigi di qualsiasi estrazione sociale, vengono preparati dai più svariati professionisti della parola, come avvocati, attori, insegnanti di teatro, manager. Dopo sei settimane di duro lavoro, i ragazzi dovranno dar prova delle loro abilità davanti a una giuria, che alla fine nominerà “il miglior oratore del 93”. Zefrey Throwell and Josephine Decker are two artists from New York who decided to bare themselves in front of the camera. That’s how Flames was born, a documentary that narrates five years of their love story, from their first charming dates till after the end of their relationship, showing us their decision to keep seeing each other despite their breakup, in order to finish the project that engaged them for so long. An experience so profound that it lives on even now, after the film has been wrapped up. As affirmed by Throwell himself during the press conference, he still talks about the film with Decker because “When you share an experience so intense and profound with another person, part of that person stays in you, and part of you stays in that person”.

Zefrey Throwell e Josephine Decker sono due artisti newyorkesi che hanno deciso di mettersi a nudo davanti all’obiettivo della telecamera. Così è nato Flames, il documentario che racconta cinque anni della loro storia d’amore partendo dalle prime affiatate uscite e oltre la fine della loro relazione, mostrandoci anche la decisione di continuare a vedersi nonostante la rottura, per portare a termine il progetto che li ha tenuti impegnati così a lungo. Un’esperienza così profonda da continuare ancora adesso a film terminato, come ci conferma lo stesso Throwell che, in conferenza stampa, confessa di  parlare ancora del film con la Decker perché “Quando si condivide un’esperienza così profonda ed intensa con un’altra persona, un po’ di quella persona resta dentro di te, e un po’ di te resta in quella persona”. 1920s. Next to a lake, in the middle of nowhere in the Irish countryside, stands an old crumbling mansion, where twins Rachel and Edward live. The lives of the twins, entangled in a morbid relationship, are constantly plagued by a curse that has been lingering over their family for generations. Every night, ominous forces that inhabit the bottom of the lake invade their house, and compel them to meticulously follow some rules: always be in bed by midnight, never let strangers inside the house, and never try to escape in order not to jeopardize the other sibling’s life.

Anni ’20. Accanto ad un lago, sperduta nelle campagne irlandesi, sorge una vecchia villa cadente, abitata dai gemelli Rachel ed Edward. La vita dei due giovani, stretti da un legame morboso, è quotidianamente assillata dalla maledizione che da generazioni regna sulla tenuta di famiglia. Ogni notte infatti, sinistre presenze – che abitano il fondo del lago – invadono l’abitazione, obbligando i gemelli a seguire delle precise regole: essere sempre a letto entro mezzanotte, non accogliere sconosciuti in casa, non tentare mai di scappare per non mettere a repentaglio la vita dell’altro. Her name also appears in the ongoing edition within the section Festa Mobile: main character of her last film is Graham McPerson, best known as Suggs, The Madness’ frontman and one of the most important exponents of the 70’s and 80’s British ska scene.

En attendant les barbares is a simple, minimalistic movie that succeeds to deeply inspect the characters’ fears; fears that mirror those of most people in the modern world. It follows a fairy-tale journey, in which the present time is mixed with an indefinite time where wizards, knights and ghosts live.

The movie was created during a workshop involving a group of actor held by the director in Tolouse; this sense of genuine craftsmanship, of experimentation, is highlighted by the backstage photos shown at the beginning of the movie.

Un film essenziale e minimale che riesce a indagare nel  profondo le paure dei personaggi. Paure che rispecchiano i timori del mondo moderno. Un viaggio fiabesco, in cui la contemporaneità si mischia a un tempo non ben definito da cui riemergono maghi, cavalieri e fantasmi. In una Lisbona soffocata dalla crisi economica, gli operai di un fabbrica di ascensori si trovano a dover lottare contro la chiusura dello stabilimento. Dopo l’organizzazione di un’occupazione, il gruppo si ritrova solo con la fabbrica da gestire in autonomia, poiché i dirigenti spariti da un giorno all’altro. Cominciano così un periodo di completa inattività in cui gli operai in abiti da lavoro attendono vicino ai loro macchinari spenti che finisca il turno per poter tornare a casa.
